Correction to food group news

I was jumping the gun and had incorrect information about the potential use of part of the Burial Ground for fruit trees and bushes - this is not definite yet, but it is a possibility which may happen. Apologies for the misinformation. Continue

Food group news

The food group have two definite projects in the pipeline, both involving land to grow food on. The church committee have agreed that part of the Burial Ground at the parish church could be planted with mixed fruit bushes and trees. And 2/3 of an acre up Yanley Lane (on the same field as the Chicken Collective) which could be used for veg growing. A Local Food Grant application will go in in August, and there's a meeting on Tues 15 Sept at the Angel pub (pantry room) for people interested in get… Continue

North Somerset Transition meet-up

I've been in touch with Transition Winscombe and Transition Wrington, and we're talking about arranging to meet up and share experiences, in January. I think it'll be good to establish a networking relationship with them, and also the Pill group. Continue

BBC2 Peak oil / climate change thriller

Did anyone see (or even better, did anyone record) last week's 2-part drama 'Burn Up' by Simon Beaufoy, writer of the Full Monty? There's a great article by Simon from the Mail on Sunday about his journey through horror and shock about what an educated oil man told him would be a 'global crash....somewhere between 2008 and 2010'. I recommend reading it at http://www.mailonsunday.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1036513/Even-oilmen-believe-planet-burning-says-Full-Monty-writer-terrifying-TV-drama.html (so… Continue

N Somerset Zero Waste Week, 29 Sept-5 Oct

Angela Neale has forwarded me info about this, suggesting we might spearhead it in LA. The idea is to get as many people and groups to avoid all packaging etc that can't be recycled for a week. Should we get involved and at the same time raise our own profile? Continue

Cutting weeds and grass with scythes and reel mowers

Thought for the day - check out The Scythe shop at http://www.thescytheshop.co.uk/. The scythe is making a comeback in the UK, and the scythe shop is at South Petherton, Somerset! Read all about the wonders of building a relationship with your own scythe...... And then there's hand mowers - apparently the simplest sort is the reel mower. They're meant to be no more arduous than a pushalong petrol mower. One shop is at http://www.manualmowers.co.uk/?gclid=CNKN-5blrpQCFQEq1AoddCJVfQ. Wouldn't it b… Continue

Possible 'green LA trail' day and other ideas

At the film group meeting the other night we were thinking about what we might give people to take away with them, and thought a list of forthcoming activities & meetings, then we thought of having a day when people with things like solar panels or other interesting green stuff open their doors and we make a day of it. Other ideas: a talk by Ben & Emily's dad who's an alternative energy consultant, and another film showing. We agree to put this stuff on the agenda for the next meeting on… Continue

Film showing in July

The village hall is closed for redecoration in July, but Church House can hold up to 100 people. The only weekday evening it's available is Tuesday 15th, so I've provisionally booked it. We'll need to decide whether to go ahead at the meeting next week. Continue

Peak Oil and Energy Descent

I heard a government person on the radio this evening saying that he expects that we'll all be using fossil fuels for another century - how hot would that make the world I wonder? It confirmed my belief in the Transition idea of Energy Descent - that we can live better quality lives in the future using less energy, if we relocalise our culture and take away the need for much of the transportation we're used to. Last night I finished reading the Transition Handbook, and reconnected with the idea… Continue

Great work getting this website up and running Anna. I didn't make it to the Hotwells film showing on Thursday - what did anyone who was there make of it? See lots of you at the meeting next Wednesday 18th 7.30 at the British Legion. Bill Continue
